"In recent days, some areas have been affected by rumors that have sparked intensive buying of salt, and some lawless merchants have leapt at the opportunity to raise prices," said the NDRC in an emailed statement.

"Don't believe rumors, don't spread rumors, and don't panic buy," said the notice.

Salt containing iodine, however, would not shield against the radiation, medical experts said in newspaper reports on Thursday, adding there was no reason for alarm in China, which is thousands of kilometers away from the reactors.

Still, some Chinese residents formed long lines to buy salt, and the state distribution company has vowed to speed up supply.

Consumers in cities along the China’s coastline, such as Shanghai and Guangzhou, and even in inland capital Beijing, began stockpiling table salt after problems at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear-power complex sparked concerns that radiation would spread to China by air and sea, possibly contaminating the land and future food sources.

While iodized table salt does contain healthy, nonradioactive iodine, health authorities say it doesn’t contain enough to protect the body against damage from radioactive iodine that may be released during a nuclear event.

Further, only a fraction of China’s salt for consumption comes from the sea, said Song Zhangjing, a spokesman for industry organization the China Salt  Association. “In China, most salt are from salt mines.”

China’s salt-buying rush is a sign of widespread fear that Japan’s nuclear woes will have far-reaching implications beyond the island. News of Fukushima’s nuclear leaks have stirred up memories of Ukraine’s nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986 and fears that nuclear disaster will not be contained.

Supermarkets in the capital of Beijing and many cities across the country have run out of salt in the last several days as a wave of panic buying spread across provinces from eastern Zhejiang to southern Guangdong to western Sichuan.

Prices of salt jumped five or 10-fold in southern Guangdong, the Internet portal sina.com reported.

In Shanghai, Dong Linhua, a 57-year-old factory worker, said he wanted to buy just 2.2 pounds (1 kilogram) of salt but could not even find that.

“Salt is not available in any of the shops,” he said. Though Dong said he didn’t believe the rumours, he wanted to have the salt for his family.

“Salt sold out early this morning,” an unnamed employee of the French grocery chain Carrefour in Shanghai told the AFP. According to the worker, the shop’s store of salt was depleted within a half hour of opening time Thursday. She also said that other sellers around town had raised salt prices by up to 600%.

Another supermarket in the south Chinese city of Guangzhou, 75 miles from Hong Kong, has imposed limits on the amount of salt consumers can purchase in the face of unrelenting queues. “One client can only buy two bags of salt,” a staff member told the AFP.  Zou Hemei, a woman in Shanghai, went to six supermarkets to try and find salt to cook with, but found all of their supplies exhausted. “I ended up buying soy sauce as a substitute,” she said to Bloomberg. A customer in the seaport city of Ningbo told CCTV that she brought home with a five-year supply of the granule to allay her family’s fears.
